How to Play Planechase

Planechase is a magic product which can be played with any format. It is not a format in itself, but rather an addition to the game rules.

The Planar Die

The Planar die is needed to play Planechase. It is a six sided die containing 4 empty faces, 1 planeswalker symbol, and one chaos symbol. It is included in all Planechase suppliment products, however if you do not have one it can easily be substituted. Using a normal six-sided die you can assign two numbers to be the symbols.

Whenever you roll the planeswalker symbol, you planeswalk. To planeswalk you place the current plane card on the bottom of the active planar deck, then reveal the top card of your own planar library. If it is a plane you have any planeswalking triggers occur, then continue with your turn. If you encounter a phenomenon, trigger its ability and immediatly planeswalk again.

Whenever you roll the chaos symbol, you trigger the ability of the current planes chaos ability. This is fairly simple, as all planes have these abilities (listed at the bottom of the plane card) as well as any explination text on how they work. If you are confused on how to use them, search the planar cards name on Gatherer to find any further descriptions and explinations needed.

You may only roll the planar die during your own turn and only any time you could cast a sorcery. The first roll costs zero mana to do, then each additional roll costs one additional mana (second roll is one mana, third roll is two mana, etc.). Rolling the die does not use the stack, so no players may respond to it. Planeswalking and the chaos abilites of planes do use the stack and may be redirected and targeted as abilites but not spells.

Planar Cards

The pivitol point of Planechase are the planar cards. There are three ways to use these cards in the game, we will go over all three here.

Central Planar Deck

The central planar deck is the most simple way to play planechase. You place a planar deck containing any number of planar cards in the center of the table. At the beginning of the game after all mulligans have been decided the starting player reveals the top card of the deck, this is now the active plane. If a player would planeswalk away the active plane would be placed on the bottom of the planar deck and the next card down would be revealed.

Player Planar Decks

With player planar decks, the game is played very similarly to the central deck. Each player gets a personal deck of any 15 planar cards. The player going first reveals the top card of their planar deck after all mulligans have been decided, this is the active plane for all players. If a player would planeswalk, the active plane is placed on the bottom if its owners deck. The new plane is revealed from the rollers library and this is the new active plane.

Map of the Blind Eternities

To play with the map deck, you will need lots of space, preferably in the center of the table. After mulligans have been decided, a plane from a central planar deck will be placed on the center of the table. When a player planeswalks away from a plane, they choose an open space up, down, left or right of the current plane and place the new planar card in that spot. The location must be chosen BEFORE looking at the face of the planar card. Place a token on the new plane to mark the current plane, move this token whenever you planeswalk to a new active plane. Players may choose to planeswalk back to a plane already placed as long as it is touching a side of the current plane. Planar cards connected to the corners of the current plane cannot be planeswalked to.
